A Prescription for Healthier Physicians

With doctors suffering more burnout than ever, could mindfulness be the solution? 

Anywhere from one in three to more than half of all doctors is suffering from burnout (depending on which study you read), with potentially devastating clinical implications. Not only do they suffer more from depression, but they also become less professional and are more prone to making errors.

Results from a study published in The Journal of the American Medical Association show that primary care physicians who participated in a year-long course on mindfulness became less burned out, less emotionally exhausted, and more empathetic toward patients.

Seventy physicians enrolled and participated in the four components of the course—mindfulness meditation; writing sessions; discussions; and lectures on topics like managing conflict, setting boundaries and self-care.
