Over the past few weeks, our publisher James Gimian has been sitting down with the experts in the field of mindfulness to find out what they’re working on right now and what new developments we can expect from the field in 2016. We’ve compiled these conversations into a series we’re calling The Publisher’s Roundtable on Mindfulness in 2016.

In part one of the series we hear from mindfulness experts who are pushing the boundaries in the fields of education and child development:

Tish Jennings, Ph.D.

Associate professor at the University of Virginia Curry School of Education. Author of Mindfulness for Teachers: Simple Skills for Peace and Productivity in the Classroom.

“We’re reinventing health education to create a holistic, child-centered health and PE curriculum that we will be testing in Louisville Kentucky.”

Susan Kaiser Greenland

Author of The Mindful Child, founder of Inner Kids, and teacher of mindful awareness to teens, families, and parents, and other caregivers.

“How can you get the essential pieces of this work and this worldview out to people who have little to no experience meditating, yet have a desire to start helping kids right away?”

Jessica Morey

Executive Director and lead teacher of Inward Bound Mindfulness Education (IBMe)

“How do we take mindfulness out of the short moments of watching our breath and look at what it means for impacting the world?”

Scott Kriens

Co-founder, along with his wife Joanie Kriens, of the 1440 Foundation and the 1440 Multiversity.

“We need to translate the invitation to mindfulness practices from an abstract aspiration into a concrete invitation to experiential learning.”

Ali Smith

Co-founder of the Holistic Life Foundation, teaching mindfulness and yoga in inner-city schools.

“Our job is to teach people how to help themselves.”

Mark Bertin, M.D.

A developmental-behavioral pediatrician and Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at New York Medical College. He’s the author of Mindful Parenting for ADHD.

“Mindfulness isn’t just a cool idea, it’s research backed. And that research overlaps with a lot of other science in child development that explores what we can do to set our children up for success.”
