Tracing the History of Acceptance

Acceptance goes hand-and-hand with mindfulness, and has been a core part of major mindfulness-based therapies.

The most recent issue of the journal Imagination, Cognition, and Personality has published a comprehensive review of acceptance by Dr. John C. Williams and Dr. Steven Jay Lynn. The 50-page article, entitled Acceptance: An Historical and Conceptual Review, traces the philosophical and religious roots of acceptance, from its inclusion in psychological theory by Freud to the present mindfulness and acceptance-based treatments. It also includes various measures of acceptance and related constructs.
